About

3D Blacksburg uses Spatial Data Infrastructure to catalyze information services through online virtual environments and telecommunication networks.

Creating a virtual mirror world expands the ability of scientists, urban planners, artists, and citizens to model hypotheses.

Citizen Science

"Citizen Science" is a term used to describe scientific experiments that use people without formal scientific training to collect the data needed for the experiment. Numerous projects are currently operating throughout the United States and Canada, and use of the type of research has grown (Willyard, 2009) because of its benefits both to science and to the public. Scientists benefit from larger sets of data than they can collect themselves, which allow broader trends to be recognized. They can also spend more of their time analyzing results instead of collecting the data. Participants learn more about science, and the data and results can benefit the entire community by allowing citizens to make environmentally sound decisions.
